Toney gets surprise England call-up ahead of June qualifiers

Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney has been handed a shock return to the England squad by head coach Thomas Tuchel, ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and the friendly match against Senegal in June.

The former Brentford forward was part of the Three Lions squad that finished second at last summer’s European Championships, although he has not featured for the country since.

Toney’s club form

The 29-year old joined Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia from Brentford last summer and has scored 29 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions this season.

Toney was also influential as the Arabian giants secured a first-ever Champions League title, defeating Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 in the AFC Champions League final.

England squad for June internationals 

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka were recalled to the squad after missing out in March while the likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden all miss out.

Arsenal’s Ben White who was expected to return to the squad ahead of next month was however not called up to the squad while Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah was called up to the squad for the first time.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, James Trafford.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dan Burn, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Reece James, Ezri Konsa, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers.

Forwards: Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins.

What next for England?

The Three Lions have maximum points in Group K after winning their first two matches in qualifying against Albania and Latvia.

Thomas Tuchel and his squad head to Spain to face Andorra on June 7 before hosting Senegal at the City Ground three days later.
