Gundogan hints at Manchester City extension

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has stated that he expects to remain at the club next season.

The German international rejoined Pep Guardiola’s side from Barcelona just one year after initially leaving last summer and has hinted at the possibility of staying for another season.

What Gundogan said

“Nobody has said anything [different] to me so far!” Gündogan said.

“Yeah, my contract got extended another year so obviously that’s what I expect right now.”

City’s need for a summer rebuild

After enduring their worst campaign in nearly a decade, Pep Guardiola’s side face a crucial summer rebuild especially with reinforcements in midfield.

Manchester City finished third in the Premier League while they also ended the season without a major piece of silverware, after also losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last weekend.

Speaking recently in an interview, Guardiola stressed the importance of a rebuild although he ruled out a complete overhaul.

“I don’t have that feeling,” he said. Maybe the club is a little different but I have 24 players and I saw them training the other day and said ‘oh my god how good they are.’

“New faces will come, especially in positions where we are weaker, but I don’t think a lot.

We have players under contract who want to stay here and I don’t want a lot of players. I don’t have the feeling that a lot of people will come. We will see. The summer is long”, the Spaniard continued.

Will Gundogan remain at City?

Gundogan returned to City last summer on an initial one year deal with the option of an additional year if certain terms are met.

Although the 34-year old looks certain to stay having met the criteria based on appearances made last season, Kevin De Bruyne’s exit and Kyle Walker possible departure have cast doubt on his future at the club.
