Gabriel Martinelli Arsenal contract

Arsenal close to agreeing new contract with Gabriel

Arsenal have presented a new long-term contract to defender Gabriel Magalhães.

Sporting director, Andrea Berta has contacted the centre-back’s camp over a possible contract extension. Those negotiations are now approaching a successful conclusion.

Securing Gabriel’s future is a priority for Arsenal. It will also be a significant statement from the outset of a transfer window which Berta has a considerable amount of business to attend to.

Gabriel Magalhães future at Arsenal

The Brazilian has been a vital piece at the Emirates Stadium since joining from French side Lille in 2020. He has made 210 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals. The 27-year-old has also forged a strong centre-back partnership with William Saliba.

Martinelli has been sidelined since April after sustaining a hamstring injury that required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season.

He made 42 appearances for Arsenal this season as he helped the side finish second in the Premier League. Club manager Mikel Arteta described him in April as the club’s “best defender”.

Gabriel Magalhães’ stint at Brazil

Gabriel began his career at Brazilian side Avai and moved to Lille in 2017. He made 52 appearances for the club and had loan spells at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb before joining Arsenal.

Arsenal also opened talks with Saliba over a new contract earlier this month, ending speculation around his future, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in the 24-year-old. Saliba, signed a new contract in 2023 which saw his deal extended to the summer of 2027. Berta has held discussions with Saliba’s camp to extend his stay.

Why Arsenal want to get contracts sorted

Besides Arsenal’s transfer activity this summer, there are also some vital contract negotiations for sporting director Andrea Berta to tackle.

A number of key players have deals that expire in the summer of 2027 — as well as Gabriel, that’s also the expiry date for William Saliba and Bukayo Saka.

An agreement with Gabriel would be an important step in the right direction, and a signifier that as well as strengthening the squad, Arsenal are eager to retain their best players.
