Florian Wirtz drops massive transfer hint in social media post

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has all but confirmed his imminent transfer to reigning Premier League champions Liverpool after taking to social media to shut down rumours that he is demanding a particular shirt number.

What happened?

Recent reports have claimed that Wirtz is insistent on wearing the number 10 shirt at Liverpool, the same number he wears at Leverkusen. However, Liverpool’s number 10 jersey is currently taken by Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who has been closely following developments surrounding Wirtz’s future, made this claim on X, but the Germany international has taken to his Instagram story to set the record straight.

“Who says I want the 10,” he wrote. “I respect players. Don’t believe everything that’s written,” adding a clown emoji.

Wirtz dismisses shirt number claims but not Liverpool move

While Wirtz has rubbished claims about his wanting Mac Allister’s shirt, the fact that he said nothing about the purported Liverpool move itself means the German gem could well and truly be on his way to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool are reportedly negotiating with Bayer Leverkusen, who value the 22-year-old at €135 million, as they try to agree on a final fee and payment terms before securing his signature.

Reports from several media outlets indicate that Wirtz’s move to the red half of Merseyside is actually now just a matter of when and not if.

If all goes according to plan, Liverpool will make Wirtz their second summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, having already signed Jeremy Frimpong from the Bay Arena.
