Gabriel Magalhães signs new Arsenal contract until 2029

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães has signed a new contract with the club until 2029.

What happened?

Arsenal were in advanced talks to tie the defender down to a long-term deal last month. His previous contract was set to expire in 2027.

Sporting director Andrea Berta was in talks with the centre-back’s camp in March. This comes shortly after the player started his role at the club.

What did Gabriel Magalhães say?

“I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot,” said Gabriel.

“I’m so proud of myself, it’s an amazing journey, and I’m so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.“Arsenal is an amazing club and I’m so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my teammates, I love this stadium. I’m so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.”

Gabriel Magalhães at Arsenal

Gabriel Magalhães appeared 42 times for Arsenal in 2024-25 but sustained a hamstring injury in April that required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season. Arsenal said that the aim is for him to be ready for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 27-year-old has made 210 appearances for the club and has scored 20 goals.

After beginning his career with Brazilian side Avai, Gabriel Magalhães signed for Ligue 1 team Lille in 2017, where he made 42 appearances and had loan stints at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb. He signed for Arsenal in 2020 and has helped Mikel Arteta’s side to three consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League.

Gabriel has been capped 14 times by the Brazil national team after receiving his first call-up in 2023.

Arsenal are also in talks to sign William Saliba, Gabriel’s partner in the heart of the Arsenal defence, to a new contract. The France international has been targeted by Real Madrid, though Berta has held discussions with Saliba’s camp over extending his tenure at the Emirates.

The club have already confirmed that Jorginho will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month, with the 33-year-old set to join Brazilian club Flamengo on a free transfer. Left-back Kieran Tierney is also leaving, after agreeing in February to rejoin Scottish champions Celtic at the end of his contract.

Thomas Partey’s contract is set to expire on June 30 though Arsenal remain in talks with the midfielder over a new deal.
