Trent Alexander-Arnold will no longer have his family name “Alexander-Arnold” on the back of his shirt from next season as revealed to the public following his official presentation as a Real Madrid player on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Alexander-Arnold completed a long anticipated move to Real Madrid a few weeks back, leaving boyhood club Liverpool much to the ire of many fans of the Merseyside giants. The England international desired a change and his new chapter in the Spanish capital certainly holds plenty of it for him.
For example, the 26-year-old defender will now wear the number 12 instead of his preferred 66 on the back of his jersey due to La Liga rules which state that first-team players must wear a number between 1 and 25. Another major change to the back of his jersey will see just “Trent” adorn the back of his shirt.

Why did Trent Alexander-Arnold change his name?
Pressed for an explanation about his decision during his introductory press conference, Alexander-Arnold opened up on the reason for this change.
”I’ve always found that when I’ve travelled to Europe, the whole ‘name’ situation confuses a lot of people—three names, double-barrelled,” he revealed.
“Alexander-Arnold, people call me Arnold, people call me Alexander, people call me Alex, people call me Trent… there’s a lot that goes on.
”I just thought let’s make it simple, let’s make it easy. Trent on the back, be known as Trent. That’s my name and what people will call me.”
When is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first game?
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been officially added to Real Madrid’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament kicks off on Saturday, June 14 in Florida, with Los Blancos placed in Group H, the last group to begin play.
As a result, his first potential appearance for Madrid could come on Wednesday, June 18, when they take on Saudi champions Al Hilal. With Dani Carvajal still recovering from a long-term knee injury, there’s a strong chance Alexander-Arnold could be named in the starting XI.
