Bayern Munich sets record with thumping win over Auckland City

German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich set a new record at the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday evening with a 10-0 demolition of Auckland City in Group C opening match.

The win was the biggest margin in the competition’s history, breaking the record held by Saudi Arabia side Al-Hilal, who defeated Al Jazira 6-1 in 2021.

As it happened

The newly-crowned Bundesliga champions came into the tie as massive favorites over the minnows from New Zealand, although their last appearance was in 2020 when they defeated Mexican side Tigres UANL 1-0 in the final.

Club legend Thomas Muller was included in the starting lineup, in his last tournament for the Bavarians.

Kingsley Coman opened the floodgates in the sixth minute with a header from a corner-kick past Conor Tracey in the Auckland City goal.

Sacha Boey and Michael Olise scored twice in two minutes to put Bayern 3-0 ahead before Coman grabbed his second of the game soon after to make it 4-0.

Muller grabbed his first of the game and Bayern’s fifth on the stroke of halftime before Olise scored his second of the game with a stunning curling effort from 25 yards.

Second half substitute Jamal Musiala scored a 23-minute hat trick including a penalty in the 73rd minute, before Muller grabbed a second of the night and the 250th of his career to make it double figures for the German side.

Vincent Kompany’s side sealed a dominant 10-0 victory over Auckland City in a statement win ahead of their remaining fixtures.

Bayern make history

The 10-0 victory became the biggest margin in the history of the competition, eclipsing Al-Hilal’s 6-1 triumph over Al Jazira in 2021.
