Manchester City star Phil Foden is looking to prove his naysayers wrong at the ongoing Club World Cup after enduring one of his most disappointing campaigns in a City shirt last season.
Foden and Manchester City endured a less than ideal outing in the 2024/2025 season. The England international’s on and off form saw him manage 15 goals involvements as the Cityzens struggled for the better part of a campaign that ended without silverware.
However, the tides appear to have turned as Foden looks like he’s back to his best form again. The 25-year-old forward was the star turn as City cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Wydad AC in their opening game of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Foden, who bagged two goal contributions (1G, 1A) while putting in a Man of the Match performance, believes the struggles of last season are well behind him now.
“The hunger inside me is back, and I want to prove people wrong,” Foden said after the game.
“It was a difficult season. I’m not going to lie. It was not the best. I got a little bit of time off, rested. Yeah, new start, new me. I’m just looking forward to the season.
“I’m happy to get back in with the goals, obviously creating chances as well.”
Foden became the first English player to score in multiple editions of the competition, including all formats, having also found the back of the net at the 2023 edition of the tournament.
Up next for Manchester City in the group stage of the Club World Cup is a game against Al Ain on Monday, June 23 before they will have to face Juventus just three days later.
