Gundogan affirms commitment to Man City amid Galatasaray links

Following his two-goal performance in Manchester City’s Club World Cup 6-0 victory over Al Ain, Ilkay Gündoğan has made it clear he intends to stay at the club, despite ongoing links to Galatasaray.

Gundogan, initially left the former Premier League champions in 2023 for Spanish side Barcelona, before rejoining Pep Guardiola’s side last summer after just a year away from the club.

The 34-year old who played 50 times in an underwhelming campaign last season, also revealed his commitment to playing at the highest level despite his age.

“I think so, yes. I have a one-year contract and I’m very happy here and I think everyone knows that”, he said when asked if he intends to remain at the club.

“And I am committed to the competition, and I’m enjoying my football. I still believe that I have several years in me (of being able) to play on the highest level by taking good care of myself. I think I’ve proven that.

Also in last season I didn’t miss a game, so I’m available. I’m fit. I feel really good and I want to play on the highest level for much longer”, Gundogan concluded.

The Cityzens romped to a 6-0 win over Al Ain in the early hours of Monday in their second group game at the Club World Cup.

Gundogan opened the scoring in fortuitous circumstance, before the 19-year old Claudio Echeverri added a second with a sublime strike from a free-kick.

Erling Haaland, who had missed two previous opportunities, added a third from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time after a foul on Manuel Akanji.

Second half goals from Gundogan, his second of the game, Oscar Bobb and new recruit Rayan Cherki completed the rout as City secured qualification for the knockout stages.

Manchester City take on Juventus in their final group game next Thursday, with a possible knockout clash against Real Madrid looming.
