Ex- Liverpool midfielder Lallana calls time on remarkable career

Adam Lallana has officially retired from professional football at 37.

Bringing down the curtain on a career characterized by diligent effort, ball elegant, and unrelenting pressure, the former Liverpool and England midfielder left behind a heritage founded on toughness, originality, and silverware.

Originally gaining notoriety at Southampton, Lallana first gained prominence. He was instrumental in their climb from Championship to the Premier League. He scored 60 goals over two spells at St Mary’s and featured in almost 300 matches.

His performances in 2014 resulted in a transfer to Liverpool. Under Brendan Rodgers, he became an immediate impact with four goals and 41 games in his first year.

The St Albans-born midfielder, however, blossomed under Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp’s high-intensity approach found him a perfect fit almost instantly. Using a quick football intellect and tireless energy, he assisted the attack from the front and connect midfield.

He struck his best during the 2016–17 campaign. Playing a major part in The Reds’ comeback to Champions League football, Lallana scored eight league goals and set seven others.

Although injuries later restricted his influence, he still contributed to some of the most memorable events in the club.

He made appearances in the Champions League finals of 2018 and 2019. Celebrating with the team a year after defeating Tottenham, he was on the field in Kyiv against Real Madrid.

His final Liverpool season was the 2019–20 campaign. He raised the Premier League championship last, followed by the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Playing 15 league matches that year, he scored a memorable equaliser at Old Trafford thereby saving Liverpool’s unbeaten start.

Having played 178 games and scored 22 goals, Lallana departed Anfield in 2020.

He joined Brighton & Hove Albion and increased his career count by more than 100 additional games, scoring four goals before departing in 2024.

He came back to Southampton for one last effort last year before deciding to retire.

Wearing the Three Lions proudly in international competitions, Lallana also played 34 times for England and scored three goals.

Stepping out of the game, Lallana ends with head held high, leaving an enduring legacy in English football.
