Young and exciting Real Madrid bound midfielder Franco Mastantuono has revealed that current manager Xabi Alonso was hugely influential in his decision to make a big move to the Spanish capital.
The young Argentine was highly sought-after by most of Europe’s top sides. Manchester United and Chelsea were widely credited with interest in the teenager, while the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona were also reported to be monitoring the player.
However, it was Madrid who won the race for Mastantuono’s signature earlier this month. Before putting pen to paper on a deal which will see River Plate earn €45 million, the teenage sensation had a chat with newly appointed Alonso.
“The way Xabi handled me was incredible,” Mastantuono said in an interview with DAZN.
“I’m very grateful to him. The talk had a huge influence on me because the fact that a coach wants you is a vote of confidence for a player who’s leaving a huge club like River Plate. That’s not easy. His words really motivated me to make the jump.
“Playing for Real Madrid is a dream for me. It’s the biggest club in the world, it’s the team that wins the most in Europe. Any player wants to play there.
“All players want to be there. I’m going to have to change my life to go play there. I don’t need to say it in words; everyone knows what it’s like.
“In football, I’m going to have to keep learning, and I’m sure I still have a lot more to learn. I like to listen, learn, and observe. That’s my greatest strength, and it helps me solve problems on the pitch.”
Mastantuono is currently still tied to River Plate who are participating in the Club World Cup. After the competition, the Argentine will finally join up with his new teammates.
