Atletico Madrid are in talks to sign USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis.
Atletico were interested in signing Cardoso as per reports by The Athletic, with club-to-club negotiations in Madrid set to take place this week.
Tottenham Hotspur had a first refusal option for the 23-year-old, which became active this summer, as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s transfer to Betis in 2024.
Atletico and Betis are negotiating a deal worth in the region of €30 million (£25.5m; $34.8m), but no fee agreement has yet been reached.

Cardoso joined Betis from Brazilian side Internacional in January 2024 and has registered five goals and three assists over 45 appearances.
The central midfielder helped Betis to a sixth-place league finish and the Europa Conference League final last season — which they lost 4-1 to Chelsea — and had signed a contract extension until 2030 at Betis in February.
Cardoso made his first senior international appearance for the U.S. at the age of 19 and has played in 18 matches since being promoted from the under-23 squad in 2020.
He was called up in March by Mauricio Pochettino for the CONCACAF Nations League but had to pull out due to a muscle injury.
Atletico, who were eliminated from the Club World Cup on Monday, will play Champions League football next season after their third-place finish in La Liga.
