Maresca reveals transfer plan for exciting Chelsea youngster

Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca has made it clear that exciting youngster Josh Acheampong is not for sale, despite growing interest from several top clubs all over Europe.

Acheampong faced an uncertain future at the start of last season due to contract disputes but has since become a more regular presence in Enzo Maresca’s setup after signing a new deal with the Blues late last year.

The 19-year-old has now made 14 appearances for the senior team, playing a key role in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League campaign last season. Most recently, he featured for the full 90 minutes in the 3–0 win over Espérance de Tunis at the FIFA Club World Cup.

His performances have caught the eye of clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, but Maresca has reiterated that Acheampong remains firmly in his plans heading into the 2025/2026 season.

“The clubs that you mentioned like Josh, but we also like Josh,” the Chelsea boss said. “All clubs like good players. My idea, my plan with Josh is quite clear. I really like Josh and I think potentially he can be a top defender for this club.

“It’s on him also to have the right timing to do things. We are full of young players here, full of talented players, even defenders, so I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us, and I’m very happy if he’s going to be with us.”

Acheampong will compete with club captain Reece James and Malo Gusto for a spot in the starting XI next season. However, Maresca’s utilization of James in the middle of the park could open up more opportunities for the youngster.
