Mercurial Argentine legend Lionel Messi believes Inter Miami gave a pretty good account of themselves at the Club World Cup, despite their elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Facing his former employers for the first time since departing the Parcs des Princes, a relatively lively Messi recorded the highest number of shots in the match (four), alongside Achraf Hakimi and Bradley Barcola.
However, he was powerless against the superior fire power of the European champions as PSG raced to a commanding 4-0 victory in Atlanta. Joao Neves struck twice, while Tomas Aviles turned the ball into his own net. Hakimi then added a fourth to cap off the dominant display.
Despite the early exit, Messi expressed satisfaction with Inter Miami’s overall performance, insisting that the team presented itself well during the tournament.
“Well, the game was what was expected,” Messi said after the defeat. “They are a huge team. Obviously, they are the champions of the last edition of the Champions League.
“[They’re] very good. It was the game we expected. We tried to do the best possible, and we left a good image in the Club World Cup level.”
Messi’s Miami spurned a great chance to top their group and secure what would have been an easier route to the quarterfinals. The Herons, despite leading 2-0 against Palmeiras in their final group game, conceded two late goals to end the match in a draw. Had they won, their opponents in the last 16 would have been Botafogo.
“We remain with the sentiment against Palmeiras that [instead of] winning the game 2-0, [Miami drew] and we had to face PSG, which was more complicated,” Messi added.
“But well, it’s not a disappointment either, it’s just simply a situation that could’ve been different. Getting the draw in the final minutes left a sour taste, but I think beyond that, we competed.
“It’s over, and now we have to think about what’s next.”
