Joao Pedro joins Chelsea from Brighton in £60m deal

Brazilian striker Joao Pedro has officially signed for Chelsea from Brighton in a deal said to be worth up to £60 million.

Having signed a seven-year deal, the 23-year-old has traveled to the United States to link with Enzo Maresca’s team for the Club World Cup.

As clubs can record fresh signings between June 27 and July 3, the forward is qualified to participate in the tournament. His Chelsea debut could come as early as Saturday in the quarterfinal clash against Palmeiras in Philadelphia.

The Brazil international now has the chance to win silverware within his first month at the club.

“I grew up watching the Premier League, and Chelsea were a club that won trophies,” the striker told the club’s official media. “So, when you join Chelsea, you can only think one thing: to win trophies. Every competition, you have to think, ‘I play for Chelsea and that is my ambition’.”

Newcastle United had earlier this summer expressed interest in the former Fluminense striker and submitted a £50 million bid. Still, it is understood the forward was only concentrating on the Blues. Following his £35 million sale to Brighton in 2023, Watford, his previous team, stands to profit 20%.

Stamford Bridge heavyweights consider him to be a versatile offensive choice. He can work across the front line or as a central striker. His 70 appearances for The Seagulls produced 30 goals, highlighting the clinical edge Maresca’s team have searched for.

The Blues’ ties with The Albion, enhanced by multiple previous moves, made possible the transaction without hiccups. Pedro targets instant influence in blue right now.
