Barcelona target Nico Williams commits future to Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams has signed a new long-term deal at the club, ending speculations of a move to rivals Barcelona.

Williams, 22, signed a new eight-year deal on Friday morning keeping him at the Basque club up until 2035, quelling rumors linking him with a move away this summer.

La Liga champions Barcelona, were keen on adding the exciting forward to their squad ahead of next season, although talks with Bilbao had stalled over the payment structure of the transfer fees.

The Spanish international had reportedly agreed personal terms with the Catalan giants, although concerns remained over their ability to register him due to financial constraints.

In a statement released on Friday, Athletic Bilbao announced that Williams has committed his future to the club, which includes a 50 per cent increase on his previous €58 million release clause.

“Nico Williams renews with Athletic Club until 2035. The red-and-white winger commits to the club of his heart for the next ten seasons, and his release clause increases by more than 50%”, the club said.

The 22-year-old also revealed he was glad to extend at the club he calls his home. He said; “When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is the heart. I’m where I want to be, with my people, this is my home. Aupa Athletic!”

The news is a huge blow to suitors, especially Barcelona, who will now be forced to search for alternatives after failing to land their top transfer target.
