Chelsea have formally confirmed the acquisition of Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for a deal worth up to £51.5 million.
After the two teams concluded negotiations in Florida, the 20-year-old has signed a seven-year agreement with the Blues. Talks moved quickly during the Club World Cup, during which both sides are vying.
With an additional £3.5 million in performance-based bonuses, Gittens arrives at Chelsea for an initial £48 million. Though Bayern Munich were also in the race, Stamford Bridge powerhouses decisively acted to close the deal.
Having opted not to permanently sign Jadon Sancho, the west London club had been desperately looking for great reinforcements. Young, dynamic, and already established at a high level, the forward is perfect.
In 48 Dortmund outings across all competitions last season, the England U21 international scored 12 goals and five assists. His speed, inventiveness, and straightforwardness made him a constant menace on both sides.
“It feels great. It’s a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea. I can’t wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It’s an amazing feeling,” he said after signing the deal.
Under Enzo Maresca, the UEFA Conference League champions believe the Reading-born striker will be a long-term asset as the team keeps rebuilding with young, high-potential talent.
