London’s Metropolitan Police has charged former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey with six counts of rape and one of sexual assault.
The accusations concern three women and concern claimed crimes perpetrated between 2021 and 2022.
Thirty-two-year-old Partey disputes every allegation. He is slated to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
Though not publicly identified at the time, he was initially taken into custody in July 2022. Still, he kept playing for Arsenal throughout the inquiry.
While three other accusations include a second woman, two of the rape counts involve one woman. A third lady is charged with sexual assault.
Maintaining his innocence, Partey’s attorney, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, released a statement.
She said, “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
She said that because of pending legal actions, Partey would not provide any further remark.
Arsenal signed the Ghanaian international from Atletico Madrid in a £45 million transfer in 2020. He became a free agent on Monday when his contract ended. He made 52 appearances across all competitions last season.
The Metropolitan Police stated that the charges resulted from a probe starting in February 2022 following a first complaint of rape.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose crew is spearheading the investigation, stated: “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.”
