A Spanish court has sentenced Brazil national team coach Carlo Ancelotti to one year in jail for tax evasion connected to his time at Real Madrid in 2014.
While running the Spanish team, the 66-year-old was found guilty of not declaring income from his picture rights totaling over €1 million (about £833,000). Additionally, he has a €386,000 (£332,768) fine.
Ancelotti is unlikely to face jail time notwithstanding the sentence. Under Spanish law, prison sentences under two years for nonviolent crimes, particularly for first-time offenders, are sometimes suspended.
Like charges for 2015, the gaffer, who led Los Blancos from 2013 to 2015 and again from 2021 until now, was cleared. The court found there wasn’t enough evidence to prove he was in Spain long enough that year to be taxable.
Following his departure from Santiago Bernabeu in May 2015, Ancelotti went to London and eventually took charge at Bayern Munich. Throughout the trial, he kept his innocence and said he had entrusted advisors to manage the image rights agreement.
During the proceedings, the Italian remarked, “I never thought it could be fraud. When Real Madrid proposed the image rights structure, I contacted my English advisor. Everything seemed correct to me.”
Leading Brazil into worldwide competition, the Italian coach still rejects any misconduct notwithstanding the decision.
