Crystal Palace face Europa League uncertainty after Lyon win appeal

Crystal Palace’s Europa League hopes are still in doubt after Olympique Lyonnais successfully overturned their Ligue 1 relegation.

Having taken on substantial debts, the French titans had fallen. Though they were temporarily demoted in November, France’s financial watchdog, the DNCG, confirmed their demotion last month.

Following a vital appeal, however, Lyon have guaranteed their top-flight place and are now anticipated to maintain their Europa League berth. Had they been relegated, they had agreed to give up European competition.

Lyon published a statement honoring the result. The club lauded the appeal commission for appreciating the goals of their new management and pledged to give sporting success first priority next year.

The French top-flight side look forward while Crystal Palace remain in limbo.

Having won the FA Cup and ready to start their first-ever Europa League season, the South London club now face possible disqualification under UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations.

Conflict arose when former Palace investor John Textor, who also served on Lyon’s board, shared a presentation. Selhurst Park giants forgot UEFA’s March 1 deadline to settle the overlap by either removing Textor or putting his stake in a trust.

Although Textor has already sold his Palace shares to American billionaire Woody Johnson, UEFA’s club financial control body will now determine if the club is fit for European competition.

Before it even starts, Oliver Glasner team’s dream European trip could be stopped.
