Crystal Palace have been relegated to the Conference League following UEFA’s club-financial control body’s finding that they violated multi-club ownership rules.
UEFA decided that American investor John Textor’s Eagle Football exceeded the allowed limit for two teams in the same competition given major stakes in both Palace and Olympique Lyon.
This week’s Lyon’s victorious appeal against Ligue 1 relegation guaranteed their Europa League spot and made UEFA to react.
The Eagles had claimed Textor’s involvement was limited and that a sale of his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson was pending.
However, the panel noted the restructuring came too late and failed the March 1 compliance deadline.
Selhurst Park giants will appeal the ruling, but the next result is a change: their Europa League spot is likely to go to seventh-placed Nottingham Forest, whereas Palace falls into the Conference League.
Forest now wait official confirmation as UEFA completes next season’s European schedule.
