Arsenal are working to sign Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera

Arsenal are working to complete the signing of centre-back Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia.

Personal terms are said in place with the 21-year-old and the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement.

Arsenal have been active in the transfer market, having already secured the arrivals of midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard from Real Sociedad and Brentford respectively, alongside goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.

The club have also agreed a deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke and have an agreement in principle to sign Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres in a deal worth a total of €73.5million.

The north London side see Mosquera as a defensive priority this summer and consider him an ideal cover for first-choice centre-back pairing Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba.

They previously looked at Dean Huijsen before he left Bournemouth for Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Saliba made 51 appearances last season and Gabriel featured in 42 games majority of those in central defence last term. Jakub Kiwior, Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori were the backup options.

Mosquera made 41 appearances last season, featuring in 37 of Valencia’s 38 La Liga games, and also featured in three of Spain’s four games at the under-21 European Championship this summer.

On the other hand, Takehiro Tomiyasu, whose Arsenal career was plagued by injuries, made just one appearance last campaign due to a recurring knee issue and left the club by mutual consent in July.
