Liverpool’s new goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is relishing the opportunity to work with and learn off current Reds number 1 Alisson Becker, who he describes as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The Georgian goalkeeper, who came to limelight after shining in his nation’s impressive European Championship campaign, joined Liverpool from Spanish La Liga side Valencia after spending two-and-a-half seasons manning the sticks for Los Che.
At Anfield though, he will have to literally usurp already established first-choice goalkeeper Alisson if he is nursing any hopes of playing any significant role for the reigning Premier League champions.
Nevertheless, Mamardashvili is embracing this new challenge with great enthusiasm and sees the chance to work alongside Alisson as a major opportunity.
“What I can tell about Ali, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and I am so happy to work with him. I can’t wait to start to work [with] him and learn from him,” he told Liverpool.
“Of course it will be a challenge. I like challenges and I’m here to just give my best and help the team…Liverpool has a big goalkeeper legacy and I want to try to write my own chapter.”
While Alisson will certainly remain Arne Slot’s preferred option to man the sticks for Liverpool heading into next season, his injury record in recent years suggests that Mamardashvili may well get the chance to show his talents at Anfield.
The 24-year-old has already gotten a taste of football in Liverpool’s iconic shirt when he took to the pitch during the Red’s first summer pre-season friendly game against Preston North End.
