Sagnol hails Mamardashvili’s Liverpool move as game-changer for Georgian football

Willy Sagnol has praised Giorgi Mamardashvili’s move to Liverpool saying it would provide a big boost for football in Georgia.

According to the Georgia national team coach, the decision could motivate the following generation of athletes in the nation.

“It was very big and positive news,” the gaffer revealed to Liverpoolfc.com. “Not only for Giorgi, but for the whole of Georgian football.”

He remarked that the goalie’s gesture demonstrates what can be achieved when athletes put effort to get to the top.

Former Bayern Munich Champions League champion Sagnol gave the goalkeeper his international debut in 2021.

Particularly at Euro 2024, the 24-year-old has since become a standout performer for Georgia.

With 29 saves in only four games, including a record-tying 21 in the group stage, he topped the tournament.

Though not unexpected, Sagnol said the goal-stopper’s ascent in La Liga with Valencia was swift.

Presently at Anfield, he thinks the shot-stopper is psychologically ready for the next level.

He continued: “It’s a big step forward for him. But he’s stable enough in his head to handle the pressure.

“He started in Georgia and adapted fast in Spain. I have no doubt he’ll adapt well in England too,” he added.
