LaLiga confirms plans for Barcelona fixture in USA next season

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has confirmed that plans to host a match in the United States are still very much alive, with reigning champions Barcelona emerging as the most likely team to feature in the proposed fixture.

Talks about staging LaLiga games abroad have been ongoing for years, particularly after the Spanish Super Cup was relocated to Saudi Arabia in 2022.

Last season, there were advanced plans to hold an Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona clash in Miami, but the idea was scrapped due to the devastating floods that hit the Valencian region in October and November.

Tebas has now revealed that LaLiga remains keen on taking a match to Miami in the future. Barcelona are favoured over Real Madrid for such an event, given their closer ties to the league, unlike Los Blancos president Florentino Perez, who has a strained relationship with Tebas.

“We have a commitment to play in Miami one day,” Tebas told ESPN.

“We’ve already talked about involving important teams, or seeing an Atletico de Madrid vs. Barcelona game. We’ll see what the schedule allows, but the idea is to bring a big club.

“It’s clear that, seeing the relationships with each other, the predisposition…it would be easier to win [over] Barca than Real Madrid.”

Tebas has previously explained his eagerness to take LaLiga matches to the United States, emphasizing that such an arrangement will help in strengthening Spanish football’s position in the North American market.

Whether we will get to see any official LaLiga games take place in the United States this coming season remains uncertain. But there is a huge likelihood that Tebas will go through with his plans in the near future.
