Jose Mourinho eyes return to coaching role in Portugal

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has revealed his desire to return to a coaching role in Portugal.

The former Manchester United manager joined the Turkish side last year and has just one year left on his current contract.

The 62-year-old began his managerial career at Benfica and has enjoyed a hugely successful career with trophies won across spells in England, Italy and Spain.

“I’m definitely coming to Portugal. It hasn’t happened yet, but it will,” Mourinho revealed after his team’s win in Thursday’s preseason friendly against Portimonense in Albufeira, Portugal.

“Not because I feel like I’m nearing the end, I feel far from that. I don’t want to come to Portugal for a golden retirement or for the last years of my career. I want to come to Portugal at the height of my career, in good health and physically and mentally strong. I’ll definitely be back”, he added.

Mourinho has won league titles in four countries, winning the Primeira Liga with Porto, the EPL with Chelsea, the Serie A with Inter Milan and the La Liga with Real Madrid.

He is also the only manager in history to have won all three UEFA club competitions, having won the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League and just recently, the UEFA Conference League with AS Roma in 2022.

The Portuguese who has won 26 major trophies, didn’t also close the door on the opportunity to manage the Portugal national team despite previously rejecting offers.

When asked of his preference between managing the national team or just a club in the Portugal league, he said; “Anything”.

Mourinho is currently preparing Fenerbahce for the 2025-26 season after finishing second in the recently-concluded campaign, behind league champions Galatasaray.
