Como’s Fabregas opens up on possibility of signing Lionel Messi

Como head coach Cesc Fabregas has refused to close the door on the possibility of Argentina captain Lionel Messi joining his side in the future.

Fabregas and Messi have a long-standing friendship, having played together at Barcelona from 2011-2014, while their families are close.

Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, alongside her children attended Como’s win over Lille in a preseason fixture last week, sparking speculation of a transfer for the Barcelona legend.

The 38-year-old contract at Inter Miami is set to expire in December although there has been talks of an extension.

“Never say never. She [Antonela] was here over at my house on vacation for a week with us because Leo [Messi] was going to be a week away playing in Cincinnati and in New York”, Fabregas stated.

“They [Messi’s family] took advantage to take a trip and see friends. We are very close friends, our wives are very good friends, our children are of similar ages.”

Messi is yet to make a decision on his future, but could favor a return to Europe over a stay in the United States, as he looks to remain fit ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“After the [Lille] game, I told [Como sporting director] ‘Charly’ Ludi that we can never say that Messi didn’t play at Como because his children were playing here and it’s always beautiful because of the history we have.

But no, he [Messi] is very happy in America so let’s be calm”, he continued.

After an impressive debut campaign in the Serie A where they finished 10th, Como secured a 3-2 win over French side Lille in their first official preseason match last week.

The Blue and Whites face AFC Champions Al Ahli on Wednesday in the inaugural Como Cup competition, before further games against Real Betis and Barcelona in preparation for the upcoming campaign.
