Chelsea’s Maresca provides fitness update on Levi Colwill

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that the club might be forced into the transfer market in search of a replacement due to an injury picked up by Levi Colwill in training.

The Blues resumed preseason training on Monday after an extended break following their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Colwill, 22, was instrumental in Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League triumphs, and played a key role in their UEFA Champions League qualification.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of their first preseason action of the summer, a friendly game against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, Maresca revealed the England defender suffered an injury during training, but did not reveal the extent.

The Italian said; “We had a problem the last two days with Levi Colwill that we don’t know how long he’s going to be out.

Hopefully not too long but for sure it’s a problem for us. It was the first session on Monday. Just in the last minutes of the session, he felt something”, he continued.

The Blues have bolstered their defense with the addition of Jorrel Hato from Ajax Amsterdam and welcomed back Wesley Fofana from injury, but Maresca remains open to more signings.

“We need to wait, we don’t know yet. It depends, We need to wait and then we’ll see.”, the Chelsea manager added.

We know each other from last year and you know in our way how important Levi has been.

I spoke with him yesterday (Wednesday) and I told him if we achieve what we achieved last year, it’s also because of him. He was a main player for us”, he concluded.

Chelsea play two friendly fixtures, against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, before beginning their 2025-26 EPL campaign against Crystal Palace on the 17th of August.
