Barcelona confirm Marc-Andre ter Stegen captaincy U-Turn

Barcelona have reinstated Marc-Andre ter Stegen to his role as captain following the German goalkeeper’s decision to grant the club access to his medical records.

Ter Stegen’s back injury sparked friction at Barcelona after he publicly claimed he would be out for three months, while club officials anticipated a four-month layoff that could have allowed them to offset his wages against La Liga’s salary cap.

Tensions escalated when Ter Stegen, exercising his legal rights, refused to grant the club access to his medical records, a move Barcelona deemed unbecoming of a captain, leading to his removal as skipper.

Following a detailed social media statement from the goalkeeper where he shed some light on the situation and reiterated his commitment to Barcelona, the club has since confirmed that the dispute has been resolved.

“The Club announces that the player Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorisation necessary for the Club to send La Liga the medical report relating to his surgery,” a club statement revealed.

“The disciplinary case has been closed and the player is captain of the first team once again with immediate effect.”

La Liga can now confirm whether Ter Stegen has been sidelined for over four months, and if that’s the case, his long-term absence will enable Barcelona to register Joan Garcia as his replacement.

Also considering Inigo Martinez’s departure for Al-Nassr, the La Liga champions should have the flexibility to register several players ahead of next week’s season opener against Mallorca.

Following the resolution of issues between Tee Stegen and Barcelona, Ter Stegen will now focus on his recuperation while the rest of the Blaugrana turn attention to starting their title defense in scintillating fashion.
