Hugo Ekitike was visibly moved by Anfield’s reception after opening the scoring in Liverpool’s Premier League opener.
As soon as he found the net, the crowd broke into a chant to the tune of Do the Conga and he loved every moment.
“I heard the song when I was [in the] corner. It was amazing,” the 23-year-old said. “I’m very grateful and I want to hear it louder next time! It was fun.”
On his second goal, Ekitike explained it took a little luck but ended with a composed finish.
“I’ve been a bit lucky with the touch. I tried to meg the defender but the ball came back and then I was alone.”
He dedicated the celebration to the late Diogo Jota, acknowledging the emotional weight of the occasion.
“The celebration [was] for Diogo [Jota] because I think it was an important day for him and his family and for the crowd. Obviously we were celebrating him.”
The Frenchman’s debut struck a chord. Beyond the match-winning goal and assist, he’s already woven into the fabric of Anfield through shared emotion and affection.
Fans and club alike now eagerly anticipate his next crowd-igniting appearance and that chant getting even louder.
