Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has revealed that the Red Devils rejected approaches for him this summer, despite the fact that his contract at Old Trafford is entering its final year.
Reports earlier this month indicated that Maguire was attracting interest from a number of top European clubs with teams in the Premier League and Serie A sounding out the possibility of a summer transfer.
Maguire has now confirmed that there had been interest but said Manchester United are content to keep him as a key part of Ruben Amorim’s setup for the time being.
“I’m pretty sure the club have made it aware this summer that I can’t leave the club on any terms with other clubs inquiring about my things and my position with my contract,” Maguire said, via The Times, as he addressed reporters at an event hosted by the Manchester United Foundation.
“I’m sure over the next few months they’ll sit down and we’ll have to have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend or the transfer window will open again in January.
“Obviously I have something in my mind about what I want to do and what I want to be. I don’t want to put it out there to everybody but it’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could.”
Maguire was left out of Manchester United’s starting lineup in their season opener against Arsenal, with Matthijs de Ligt preferred at the heart of Amorim’s back three alongside Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw.
The 32-year-old only featured as a late substitute, coming on for the final ten minutes. Despite this, the England international remains confident that he will get enough chances to prove himself.
