EPL: Ruben Dias signs contract extension at Manchester City

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has signed a new four-year deal at the club, keeping him until 2029, with the option of a further 12 months.

The 28-year-old joined City in a £65 million deal from Portuguese side Benfica in 2020 and has been a key part of Pep Guardiola’s setup.

The Portugal international has won four English Premier league titles, one UEFA Champions League title, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the FA Community Shield since joining the Cityzens.

“I am incredibly happy today,” Dias said.

“I’m so proud to represent this great club. City is where I want to be, at the top of the sport, competing for trophies.

The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that. I love Manchester, it is my home now, and I love the Manchester City fans.”

Dias was also named as Premier League’s player of the season in 2021, capping his debut season in England with the prestigious award.

He made 44 appearances in all competitions for City in a disappointing campaign last season and played all 90 minutes in the 4-0 thrashing of Wolves in their 25/26 season opener last Saturday.

“When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else”, he continued.

“My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract, so that I can play my part in helping us challenge for more silverware.”

Manchester City play host to Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in a lunchtime kickoff game on Saturday, hoping for consecutive wins in the league.
