Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany singled out Serge Gnabry for praise, following the German winger’s starring performance in a ruthless opening day thrashing of Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.
With the absence of Jamal Musiala due to injury as well as the exit of Thomas Muller this summer, Gnabry has found some joy operating in that central attacking midfield role. The Germany international has racked up four assists from two games so far.
Gnabry was a chief contributor and provided two assists as Kompany’s men got their Bundesliga title defence off to a flying start by subjecting Leipzig to a crushing 6-0 defeat. Harry Kane scored a hat-trick, while Michael Olise bagged a brace and Luis Díaz also found the net in the opening period.
Sharing his thoughts on Gnabry’s performance after the game, Kompany was full of praise for the Germany international and took time to emphasize just how important a player he is to the reigning champions.
“Serge is a very underrated player,” Bayern’s boss said in his post-match press conference, as reported by @iMiaSanMia. “There’s the opinion of people outside. And there’s our opinion at the club, and the opinion of his teammates. I think he’s a very underrated player, he doesn’t have many weaknesses.
“He’s been important in the big games for FC Bayern in the past. There’s almost no highlight without a Serge goal or assist. I’m not surprised because this is his normal level. I’m happy for him. He played this central role for the national team and for Bayern in the past. I’m happy we have this opportunity with Serge”
