Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that his team is not yet ready for the demands of European football as the club prepares for a Carabao Cup second-round tie against Grimsby.
United will not play in Europe this season. That, according to Amorim, is a blessing in disguise. With fewer midweek games, he believes the squad will have the breathing space to build a stronger foundation.
Speaking ahead of the cup clash, Amorim stressed the importance of rotation and long-term development.
“We have three games this week. We have quality players and we need to rotate to try to win every game,” he said.
“It is a normal thing that happens in other clubs. I think we were not prepared to play in Europe. That is my feeling.”
The gaffer added: “To have strong games in the Champions League and then play in the Premier League, we need time to develop as a team.
“We need time to prepare for every game. The games are really competitive. We need time to build the base and then, in the future, to move forward.
“We will reach a moment when we need to have Europe for everybody to play games.”
The Portuguese’s comments underline his commitment to the long game. Instead of rushing back into continental football, the coach is focused on steady growth.
With domestic fixtures piling up, he believes the Red Devils must first master consistency before embracing the full rhythm of European competition.
