The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has lifted the suspension placed on a former Plateau United goalkeeper, allowing him to register with any club of his choice while investigations continue.
The player had been suspended after reports linked him to alleged involvement in illegal betting. His refusal to sign a contract clause at Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), which prohibited betting activities, triggered the inquiry.
An inquest was held last Thursday at the NPFL office in Abuja, where the goalkeeper appeared with his legal representative.
Davidson Owumi, NPFL Chief Operating Officer, confirmed that the player cooperated fully with the panel and provided further details that widened the scope of the investigation.
“The NPFL has now written to commend the player for cooperating with the panel and offering further insights that has necessitated a wider investigation involving some others,” Owumi stated.
The league revealed that WhatsApp exchanges in its possession mentioned additional individuals who will now be invited to assist with the case.In a formal communication to the player, the NPFL clarified its stance.
“It is only fair that your career is not jeopardized while investigation hasn’t been concluded, hence the suspension placed on your registration in the NPFL has been lifted. You are free to register for any club of your choice. We thank you for your prompt response and cooperation.”
The expanded investigation is expected to involve several players whose names surfaced during the proceedings. Until then, the goalkeeper has been cleared to resume his career without restrictions.
