Kompany explains outflux of players from Bundesliga to Premier League clubs

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has shared his thoughts about what makes the Premier League very attractive for players after losing long-time summer target Nick Woltemade to Newcastle United.

The Bundesliga champions previously submitted multiple bids to try and land Woltemade earlier in the summer, but VfB Stuttgart rejected every approach. Now, the German striker is reportedly close to sealing a move to Newcastle United in a deal worth €90 million.

When Woltemade’s move becomes official, he will join an enviable array of talents that have dumped the Bundesliga for Premier League football this summer. Others include Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko. Piero Hincapie and Xavi Simons are also players who could potentially join this list before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Kompany, who enjoyed success as both a player and manager in English football suggested that the huge amount of money available to Premier League clubs compared to their Bundesliga counterparts is the main reason players are eager to swap Germany for England.

“Money,” Kompany replied in quotes revealed by Bundesliga News when reporters asked him what draws players to the Premier League.

“I remember when I got promoted to the Premier League with Burnley. Suddenly, TV money comes in, and that’s €100 million – for newly promoted teams. From a budget of €25–30 million, you suddenly jump to €125–130 million.

“That’s roughly what Bundesliga teams in the top six or eight receive. Suddenly, Frankfurt and Wolfsburg are competing with Burnley for players.

“This isn’t just a debate for Bayern Munich – it’s about how the entire Bundesliga stays competitive. The players moving to the Premier League haven’t had five or six good years, just one or two.”
