Remo Stars clinch first NPFL win after 2-1 victory over Kun Khalifat FC

Defending champions Remo Stars secured their NPFL of the 2025/26 season on Monday after a 2-1 comeback victory over hosts Kun Khalifa, in Aba.

Daniel Ogunmodede’s men had drawn their opening league fixture 1-1 against Rivers United.

Things got off to a wrong start for the champions, as they conceded a penalty within the opening quarter following an infringement in the box.

Kun Khalifa’s Henry Ezeonye stepped up and converted from 12 yards to give Khalifa a surprise lead. The scoreline remained unchanged until after the break. Remo orchestrated a number of opportunities of their own.Abubakar Ibrahim teed up Samuel Anakwe, whose square ball was blocked by Khalifat goalkeeper, Nsikak Abong, while Stanley Joseph’s free-kick went wide.

There was heightened intensity heading into the second half as Remo desperately pushed for an equalizer. Ogunmodede made a triple change in the 58th minute, with the trio of Haruna Hadi, Alex Oyowah and Samson Olasupo coming on for Adama Goita, Ibe Michael and Ebuka Anthony.

The visitors eventually got a goal worthy of their performance after Ibrahim Abubakar found the back of the net in the 70th minute. Seven minutes later, Remo took the lead for the first time in the match through substitute Samson Olasupo.

Remo Stars held on to their 2-1 leading ending to the final minutes of the game which saw them move up to fourth position on the NPFL table with four points from their first two matches. Meanwhile, Khalifat who held Enugu Rangers to a 0-0 draw on Sunday sit 15th on the table with one point from two games.

Remo Stars will be looking to secure another win when they face Warri Wolves on Sunday; while Khalifa FC will hope to clinch their first win of the season when they travel to Kwara.
