Brendan Rodgers backs Iheanacho to Thrive at Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is confident that striker Kelechi Iheanacho will return to top form at the club.

The Super Eagles forward penned a one-year deal at the Hoops with the option of an additional year, a day after the summer transfer window closed.

Iheanacho had parted ways with Spanish side Sevilla after an underwhelming spell just a year after signing for the club on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old joined Sevilla in 2024 after leaving Leicester City, but spent the second half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough after failing to shine in Spain.

His move to Scotland reunites him with Rodgers, who managed him during their time together at the Foxes, as well as goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who was also previously at the English club.

“I know Kelechi so well and I know what he can bring to the team”, Rodgers said.

“He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work rate.”

The Nigerian international enjoyed the most productive league campaign of his career under the Celtics manager in the 2020/21 season, netting 12 goals in the English Premier League.

Iheanacho also enjoyed a previous spell at former English Premier League champions Manchester City, before departing in 2017.

He provides enough experience and firepower for the Scottish champions, who had lost Adam Idah to Swansea.

“I am sure he will love being at Celtic and I believe our fans will love what he brings”, Rodgers continued.

“He has great experience and he is right in his peak years so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”
