Troost-Ekong lauds Premier League Surge of Nigerian players

Williams Troost-Ekong has described the English Premier League’s influx of Nigerian players as an exciting development.

Three Super Eagles internationals arrived in the league on transfer deadline day, joining a host of other stars who already ply their trade in the English top-flight.

Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare and Christantus Uche all secured moves to Fulham, Wolves and Crystal Palace respectively, a significant increase in the number currently in the league.

At least eight players from the country, including the likes of Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi, now feature for teams across the league.

Speaking in an interview, Ekong who once featured for Watford in the league, welcomed the development and hopes it translates into bigger results for the national team.

“It’s exciting. Players always say that it’s their dream to play in the Premier League. Arguably the best league in the world. I’m really, really happy for them”, Ekong said.

“Now we saw Uche and Tolu make their moves. Very much deserved. They’ve worked very hard last season. They’ve been very good when they come to play with us in the Super Eagles, it’s been a pleasure to play with them. I’m also a fan of my teammates.”

The likes of Nwankwo Kanu, John Obi Mikel and Jay-Jay Okocha have previously made a reputation for themselves in the league, paving way for a new generation of talents.

“I’m really excited for them, for their new chapter. When they come here, I’m very quickly going to remind them that we have other business to do.

Now that one is over. They’re excited to finish that, but I also know how much this means to them. When they come in here, I think it’s going to be a good morale boost for us”, the Super Eagles captain added.
