Tottenham Hotspur announce departure of long-time chairman Daniel Levy

Reigning Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur have announced the shocking departure of long-time executive chairman Daniel Levy after over 24 years in the role.

Levy was appointed a chairman of Tottenham Hotspur in March 2001 and now steps down from the role with the new season only just beginning.

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees,” said Levy.

“We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community.

“I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years.

“I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years. It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

He was frequently criticized for running the club on a budget that fell short of those of the other members of England’s traditional ‘big six’—Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Discontent grew particularly last season, when protests against Levy became more visible. Banners appeared with messages such as “Our game is about glory, Levy’s game is about greed” and “24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy – time for change.”

Chants of “Levy out” also rang out regularly across the campaign, underlining the growing frustration among supporters.
