Alyssa Thompson to Chelsea

Chelsea sign Angel City’s Alyssa Thompson on 5-year-deal

Women’s Super League champions Chelsea have signed United States’ and Angel City’s forward Alyssa Thompson for a club record fee just under £1m.

The deal is expected to keep her at the North London club until 2030.

Thompson’s signing comes right after striker Mayra Ramirez was ruled out of action until January following a hamstring injury. And England forward Lauren James is expected to miss the WSL season opener against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Friday.

The 20-year-old signed from Portland Thorns and Gotham FC to Angel City for a record fee of $450,000 (£335,000) in 2023, while still in high school.

Angel City were keen on keeping Thompson, who signed a contract extension in January to tie her down until 2028.

That proved to be a vital piece of business for the club, with Chelsea required to pay a bigger fee this summer.

“Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world,” Thompson said.

“Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age, and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot.

“I feel like Chelsea is such an amazing environment to do that in.”

Thompson scored her first National Women’s Soccer League goal just 11 minutes into her debut. She has six goals in 16 NWSL games this season. She has three goals in 22 games for the USA.
