Luis Suarez: Inter Miami star banned banned for six matches for spitting

Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has received a six-match suspension for spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff after the Leagues Cup final last Sunday.

Suarez, 38, was involved in a post match altercation involving other players from both teams and appeared to spit at a Sounders Staff in the aftermath.

The former Barcelona star tendered a public apology on Thursday in response to his misconduct, but has now been banned by the Leagues Cup organizing committee for six matches.

Sergio Busquets and Tomas Aviles were also involved in the post match melee and have both been suspended for two and three matches respectively.

According to the statement released by the organizing committee, the suspension would take effect from next year’s competition.

“In accordance with the Leagues Cup Regulations, all four individuals sanctioned will also receive fines as a result of their conduct. All suspensions must be served in the next edition or editions of Leagues Cup until fully completed,” the committee said in a statement.

The disciplinary committee of the Major League Soccer also has the right to enforce further actions on the involved players, which could extend the length of their suspension.

Luis Suarez has also been previously banned for other misconducts especially during his time in Europe.

In 2011, the former Uruguay striker was banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 after he was found guilty of racially abusing French defender Patrice Evra during a match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

He also received a 10-game ban by the English FA for a biting incident involving Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, before he was suspended from all football related activities for four months following a biting incident involving Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
