Nkunku opens up on Chelsea struggles after summer exit

New AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku has indicted Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca for his underwhelming stint at Stamford Bridge.

Many hailed Nkunku’s arrival in West London two years ago as a major steal. Chelsea signed the versatile forward for €60 million after he directly contributed to 53 Bundesliga goals across two seasons, expecting him to light up the Premier League.

Instead, he produced only eight goal contributions across his two years at Stamford Bridge, then secured a €42 million move to AC Milan this summer.

Misfortune largely shaped Nkunku’s struggles at Stamford Bridge. A knee injury picked up in the club’s final pre-season match of his debut summer in the United States hampered his entire first season in England, restricting him to just two league starts.

Fully fit ahead of 2024/2025 and hopeful of a fresh start under new manager Enzo Maresca, the 26-year-old instead found himself overlooked in favor of Chelsea’s other attacking options, once again confined to a peripheral role before ultimately moving on.

Now signed to San Siro, the France international has declared his determination to revive his career and prove his worth in Serie A.

“I got injured straight away and was out for five months, and upon my return I had a relapse,” Nkunku said.

“In my second year, I worked hard and did everything I could to be ready and the coach made his choices.

“I’m the same player I’ve always been. I want to play with a smile, and I know it will be different here in Milan.”
