Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk has revealed that Victor Osimhen will need to undergo further scans at the club, to determine the extent of his recent injury.
Osimhen, 26, limped off in the 35th minute of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda in a qualifying match for the 2026 FIFA World Cup last Saturday.
The former Napoli striker struggled to continue after clashing with a Rwanda defender and was subsequently replaced by Cyriel Dessers.
The Super Eagles went on to win the match 1-0, thanks to a second half strike by Tolu Arokodare.
“Osimhen clearly has some pain. He informed us. We took immediate action. If he’s not playing for the national team, we want to bring him here as soon as possible for a checkup”, Buruk revealed.
Osimhen joined the Turkish champions in a €75 million deal this summer, after spending the previous campaign on loan at the club.
He enjoyed a very stellar campaign, netting 26 goals to win the Turkish golden boot and lead Galatasaray to a league and cup double triumph.
The 26-year-old scored 37 goals in all competitions, breaking Mario Jardel’s record for most goals by a foreign player in the country.
“He’s currently unfit to play in the next two days. We’ll see what happens. This is devastating news for tonight. We hope it’s nothing serious. It’s an injury we’ll overcome as best we can,” the Galatasaray coach continued.
The striker did not travel with the Nigerian squad for their second qualifier of the month against South Africa and is expected to return back to Turkey to undergo scans on his injury.
Okan Buruk will hope the striker is not sidelined for long-term, as the Lions continue their title defense and prepare to kickstart their UEFA Champions League campaign next Thursday against Eintracht Frankfurt.
