Chalobah backs Chelsea to keep momentum ahead of Brentford clash

Trevoh Chalobah says Chelsea’s strong start to the season has boosted confidence but insists there is still plenty of work to do as the Blues prepare for a tricky trip to Brentford on Saturday night.

The defender has been ever-present at the back, helping Chelsea concede just once in three games, which was a long-range strike from West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta.

At the other end, the Enzo Maresca’s men have scored seven goals in their last two fixtures after a goalless opener, with Chalobah himself on the scoresheet in the win at the London Stadium.

“It’s always nice to start the season well, on a high,” Chalobah said. “Obviously, ending the international break on a win, unbeaten – that’s the goal. There’s a good vibe around the players coming back from the summer tournament. We’re confident and game by game, we’ve just got to take it.”

The 26-year-old defender also underlined his personal ambition to remain a key figure.

“For any player, you want to play every game. I want to give my best, work hard in training, and do my all to be in contention to start. I’m working on things I need to work on, also, and just trying to help the team.

“It’s a really tough place to go, a lot of second balls, a lot of fight. You just have to be physical. Brentford has always been a physical team, and the way they play, their style of play, we’ve got to be ready and know what’s coming.

“It’s going to be a battle. That’s the first step we have to take. Then from there we show our quality and hopefully we use that momentum, the confidence we have, to go and win the game.”

With another London derby on the horizon, Chalobah admitted there is always an extra edge.

He added: “Every game against London opponents carries an extra bit of motivation, and this weekend’s game will be no different.”
