Newcastle United have apologised to fans after uncovering an issue with tickets that were sold to tour organisers almost 10 years ago. The club confirmed that more than 100 season tickets have now been cancelled.
The discovery came after an investigation into unauthorised re-selling of tickets for home games. It followed concerns raised when a school based 200 miles away managed to buy seats for Newcastle’s Champions League clash with Barcelona at St James’ Park.
“At a time when we are doing our utmost to protect legitimate access for Newcastle United fans, we want to be fully transparent and apologise for this oversight,” the club statement read.
The Magpies stressed that this case was not linked to individual supporters re-selling tickets. Instead, it dates back to the 2015/16 season when the tour organisers originally bought the tickets.
“Upon being made aware of this issue, the club took immediate action,” Newcastle added. “The club have not received any funds above the face value price of these season tickets and have immediately returned the seats for sale to supporters who have entered the official ballot for upcoming fixtures.”
The swift action means more fans now have a fairer chance of securing seats as Newcastle continue their Champions League journey.
