Amorim challenges Man United to build on momentum after Chelsea win

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised his side’s performance following their win over Chelsea on Saturday, but urged them to build on the big performance.

The Red Devils bounced back from last weekend’s Manchester derby defeat to beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday, extending the Blues winless run to 12 visits.

Co-owner Sir Jim Radcliffe had met with Ruben Amorim in midweek with pressure growing at the club, following series of uninspiring performances.

Man United headed into the fixture with their worst start to a Premier League season for 33 years, with only four points from their first four matches.

However, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro capitalized on an early red card to Robert Sanchez, to give the Red Devils the much needed victory.

Speaking after the match, Amorim was pleased with the team’s result, but urged the players to build on the momentum in subsequent matches.

“Now it’s time to create a bit of momentum. We started the game really well, really aggressive”, Amorim said.

“I cannot remember a very good play from us, but we pushed our opponent in how aggressive we were in the first and second balls.

“We cannot have someone sent off near half-time in Casemiro, we like to complicate all our games! But it was a good game.”

Chelsea had goalkeeper Robert Sanchez sent off in the early stages and the home side made their extra man advantage count with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

The Red Devils then had Casemiro sent off in first half stoppage-time, following a second bookable offense.

The visitors upped the intensity in the second half and pulled one back through Trevoh Chalobah, although the home side kept their cool and sealed the incredible win.

“I felt the urgency, especially in the beginning of the game. The sending off helped us. If you remember the first half, we had so many opportunities three against one, three against two”, he continued.

“We have to be more clinical to finish the game sooner. With the sending off of Casemiro, you never know what is going to happen so we have to take the chance to kill the game.”
