Chelsea’s Maresca gives honest verdict on Liverpool’s title defense

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes it might be impossible to stop Liverpool from winning the English Premier League title for a second consecutive year.

The Reds claimed a record-equaling 20th title in Dutch coach Arne Slot’s first year in the 2024/25 campaign and have began their title defense in the best possible manner.

They are the only team with a 100% start to the season, winning their first five matches and already five points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

The club also added Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz in major big-money signings, as they look to further strengthen the squad and increase the gulf in quality to other teams.

“If they continue in this way I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs”, Maresca revealed.

Though it is still early days into the season, Chelsea have already found themselves seven point behind Liverpool, following a series of disappointing results.

After securing seven points from their first three matches, the Blues have only claimed a single point from the next two and are now winless in three matches in all competitions.

A 2-2 draw away at Brentford was followed by a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, before last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United.

Maresca admitted that his side have a huge deficit to close against the defending champions, who already appear to be running away with the title this season.

“They have been doing a fantastic job since last year, and the players they have decided to buy shows the intention of the club to go again for the Premier League and the Champions League, and that is quite clear”, he added.

Chelsea have a chance to end their poor run with a League Cup third round clash against Lincoln City on Tuesday night, before hosting Brighton next weekend.
