Gvardiol backs Man City’s focus on Premier League battle

Josko Gvardiol says Manchester City are fully focused on themselves as the fight for the Premier League intensifies.

The Croatian defender marked his 100th appearance for City in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, a result that capped off a demanding but positive week for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Gvardiol has been key since returning from injury. He started in the 2-0 Champions League win over Napoli and the 3-0 Manchester derby triumph, showing his importance in City’s recent turnaround.

That upturn saw the Blues climb back into the top ten of both the Premier League and Champions League tables, after suffering back-to-back defeats earlier in the campaign.

Speaking after the draw at the Etihad, the defender stressed that City’s focus remains firmly on their own performances.

“Each season the league is getting stronger and stronger and it’s going to be difficult,” said Gvardiol. “It’s the early stage of the season and there’s many games to play so we’ll see. We need to take it game by game and just be focused on ourselves.”

City now prepare for a Carabao Cup trip to Huddersfield on Wednesday as they aim to chase early silverware and build momentum.

Despite the heavy fixture list, the Croatia international believes the team’s fighting spirit is growing stronger with each match.

“We can pick so many positive things,” he explained. “Every player gave 100% to fight, every duel, every second ball. That’s what we’ve missed a little bit and me as a defender; I can tell you that I’m really happy to see my team next to me fighting for every ball.

“Today we’ve shown we’re capable of doing those things and we just need to keep going that way.

“It’s been a tough week. Three games in seven days, so I think we did a great job this week.”

He added: “We haven’t lost a game, so I think we just need to keep going that way. The next game is the Carabao Cup so hopefully we recover well and we’ll go through.”

The 23-year-old centre-back’s words underline the mentality in Guardiola’s camp, with the Cityzens determined to remain in the thick of the title race while pushing for success on all fronts.
