Alexander Isak has his sights set on helping Liverpool fight on all fronts after netting his first goal for the club. The Swedish striker opened his account in Tuesday night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Southampton at Anfield.
The win maintained Liverpool’s perfect start to the season across the Premier League, Champions League and now the League Cup.
“I think especially when you play for a club like Liverpool, you’ve got to compete on all fronts,” Isak told Liverpoolfc.com. “That’s the main goal: to be competitive in all competitions, going out to every game wanting to win.”
Isak struck just before half-time with a sharp first-time finish inside the box. His goal came after Federico Chiesa’s relentless pressing won back possession and squared the ball to him.
He added: “All of the work was really done by Fede, a high-pressure regain and from that moment I was trying to be in the right place, which I was and I just tucked it away.”
Southampton threatened an upset when Shea Charles levelled with 14 minutes left. The visitors had also hit the crossbar earlier in the match. But Liverpool responded again, with Chiesa creating Hugo Ekitike’s late winner in the 85th minute.
“It has kind of been frustrating seeing it [as an opponent] from the other side!” said Isak of Liverpool’s resilience. “It’s amazing to be a part of it. Obviously we want to work on our performances and play better throughout the parts of the game but ultimately it’s all about winning. That’s the main goal and then we can always work on details in the game.”
The appearance was Isak’s second start and third outing for Liverpool since joining from Newcastle United. Still regaining full sharpness after a disrupted pre-season, he is expected to hit top condition following the October international break.
He continued: “Obviously my situation was a bit special so I had to do some extra work, which is completely normal.
“I’m happy to do any work that will get me in better shape. It’s good. I’m working hard to be in my best shape and then it’s up to the coach [for the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday].”
